Man from Mexico

Against a rich red background, a closely cropped face emerges through layers of coral, gold, cream, and slate blue. Marks sweep around the eyes and across the cheeks, giving the portrait an energy that rewards a closer look. Created for The Painted Portrait Project from photographs Samara took in Mexico City around 2010–2011, this work turns a remembered encounter into an intimate study of color and expression. Its direct gaze holds the composition steady while the surrounding marks remain alive with movement.
