About the Painting
A direct gaze and lifted chin give this portrait a commanding presence. Copper, crimson, and gold move across C.J. Jones’s face, balanced by a pale blue head wrap, deep green shirt, and luminous blue background. Layered oil pastel marks lend richness to the skin, capturing an expression that feels both self-possessed and quietly contemplative. Part of The Painted Portrait Project, the work developed from a photograph C.J. shared with Gyan Samara. The original measures 40 × 30 inches and remains in the artist’s personal collection.

These receive the printer’s light-green resolution rating. Fine details may appear softer at these larger sizes, particularly when viewed up close. Designed as a companion to the portrait of Dana, this work can be enjoyed independently or as part of a diptych. The two sitters do not know one another, yet their portraits form a visual conversation through shared colors and contrasting gazes. For the intended arrangement, hang Dana on the left and C.J.
