Gyan Samara is a Boston-based visual artist whose practice encompasses florals, portraiture, figurative painting, landscapes, still lifes, and public art. He earned his MFA in Painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and has maintained an active painting practice for nearly three decades. Influenced by Fauvism and Impressionism, his distinctive approach combines saturated color, exaggerated forms, and energetic mark-making, balancing observation with artistic interpretation.
The Painted Portrait Project, established in 1997, explores identity, individuality, and human connection through portraits of members of the global LGBTQ+ community. Through unconventional palettes and gestural expression, Samara captures the personality and presence of his subjects while celebrating their diverse lives and experiences.
Echoes of the Landscape: Painting, Memory, and Place builds upon more than three decades of painting en plein air. Moving between observation and recollection, this evolving project examines how memory, emotion, and personal experience shape our perception of familiar and unfamiliar environments.
Expressive Florals and Still Lifes begin with arrangements Samara personally selects and composes. Through brilliant hues, contrasting forms, and dynamic compositions, he transforms familiar subjects into vibrant paintings that move between representation and abstraction.
Across these interconnected bodies of work, Samara employs oil paints, acrylics, pigment sticks, oil pastels, and cold wax to build richly textured surfaces through layering, scraping, and reworking paint. Traditionally working on heavyweight paper, he is also exploring birch panels and canvas-wrapped supports, expanding the physical possibilities of his practice. Each painting reflects an ongoing dialogue between subject, material, and intuition.
Samara's studio is located at 46 Waltham Street, Studio 325, in Boston's SoWa Arts District. Visitors are welcome during First Friday Open Studios, held on the first Friday of every month from 6–9 PM, beginning November 6, 2026.
Visitors can explore original paintings, discuss commissions, learn about The Painted Portrait Project, and inquire about private art instruction and year-round plein air painting classes.
Original paintings, open-edition and limited-edition fine art prints, commissions, and information about the artist's practice are available through his new website, Gyan Samara Fine Art, at www.gyansamaraart.com.
